A union serves a fundamentally different purpose than a coupling — where a coupling permanently joins two pipe sections, a union is specifically designed to be disconnected and reconnected repeatedly without cutting pipe. This makes the 457-015 the correct fitting wherever equipment access, periodic maintenance, component replacement, or future system modification is anticipated on a 1-1/2-inch Schedule 40 PVC run.

The fitting consists of three components: two end bodies, each with a slip socket bore for solvent welding to pipe, and a threaded union nut that draws the two bodies together at the joint. The O-ring sealing design uses an elastomeric O-ring seated in a groove on one end body that compresses against the flat mating face of the opposite body as the nut is tightened. This creates a positive, reliable seal that is independent of the mating faces themselves — an advantage over flat-face union designs where repeated assembly cycles can eventually compromise the sealing surfaces. Pressure rating is for water service at 73°F. Derate for elevated temperatures per manufacturer guidelines. Verify O-ring material compatibility for chemical service applications.
