1" Flange (Loose Ring), Slip PVC Schedule 80 (854-010)

The 854-010 is a 1" PVC Schedule 80 loose ring flange with a solvent-weld slip end, offering a flexible and field-friendly alternative to solid one-piece flanges for creating bolted break points in PVC piping systems. Like all flanged fittings, it enables the kind of planned disconnection that threaded and solvent-only joints cannot provide — making it the fitting of choice wherever pumps, valves, meters, or other inline equipment must be accessed for service without cutting and re-cementing pipe.

What sets the loose ring (Van Stone) design apart is its two-piece construction. The assembly consists of a PVC stub end — a short hub with a solvent-weld slip socket that cements permanently to the pipe — and a separate backing ring that slides over the hub and floats freely against the flared stub end face. Because the backing ring is never bonded, it continues to rotate freely even after the stub end joint has fully cured. This means bolt hole alignment to a mating flange can be dialed in at any time during assembly, eliminating the need to pre-orient holes during the narrow window of a solvent cement installation.

This rotational freedom is the 854-010's primary advantage over the solid style 851-010 flange in the same size. In tight spaces, complex piping arrangements, or any situation where final bolt hole position is difficult to predict before cementing, the loose ring design removes a significant source of installation error and rework.

The stub end face is the only surface in direct contact with the process fluid, providing full PVC chemical resistance across acids, bases, salts, and a wide range of industrial media. The backing ring serves a purely mechanical function — transferring bolt load to the stub end face — and can be replaced independently if damaged without disturbing the cemented pipe joint.

Both components are manufactured from rigid PVC Type I, Grade I (Cell Classification 12454) to ASTM D2467. NSF/ANSI 61 certification confirms suitability for potable water contact. The bolted connection mates to any ANSI Class 150 flat-face or full-face gasket and corresponding 4-bolt flange in the standard drilling pattern.

Note: Working pressure at the bolted flange connection is governed by the ANSI 150 lb rating (150 PSI @ 73°F), not the Schedule 80 pipe wall rating. This applies regardless of flange style — solid or loose ring.
