The 897-010 is a Schedule 80 PVC union with slip (socket) connections on both union tails and an EPDM o-ring face seal, sized for 1-inch pipe. Both tail sockets solvent cement permanently onto standard 1" Schedule 40 or Schedule 80 PVC pipe, and the union nut draws the two faces together to compress the o-ring, creating a pressure-tight inline seal at the union joint. When the line needs to be broken — for pump removal, valve replacement, equipment service, filter cartridge access, or system reconfiguration — simply unthread the union nut to separate the two halves cleanly, with no pipe cutting, joint destruction, or disruption to the cemented pipe runs on either side.

The slip x slip configuration is the defining distinction between the 897 series and the 898 series (FPT x FPT o-ring union previously cataloged). Where the 898 series is installed in fully threaded systems — both tails threading onto male-threaded pipe or nipples — the 897 series is designed for solvent-cemented systems, with both tails permanently bonded to the pipe run and the union joint serving as the sole disconnection point in an otherwise all-cemented assembly. This makes the 897-010 the standard union specification for cemented Schedule 80 PVC systems wherever a future-serviceable inline disconnect is required — at pump inlets and outlets, filter housings, chemical metering equipment, and any component that may need to be isolated, removed, or replaced without cutting into the permanent pipe run.

The o-ring seal design provides consistent, repeatable sealing performance across multiple open-and-close cycles — a meaningful advantage over thread-seal union types in applications involving frequent disassembly or chemical service. The EPDM o-ring can be replaced independently if the seal degrades over time. For installations handling fluids incompatible with EPDM, Viton o-ring substitutes are available for upgraded chemical resistance. Manufactured from heavy-wall Schedule 80 PVC, the 897-010 is appropriate for industrial, chemical, and elevated-pressure service environments. The dark gray color is standard for Schedule 80 PVC. Apply a medium-bodied PVC primer and standard-bodied PVC cement per ASTM D2564 to both tail sockets during installation; do not overtighten the union nut, as excessive torque can distort the o-ring seating surface.

Industries & Applications:

  • Industrial Process Piping — Provides a removable, rebuildable inline disconnect in 1" cemented Schedule 80 PVC chemical lines, allowing pump, valve, filter, or instrument removal without cutting into the permanent solvent-welded pipe run on either side of the union.
  • Chemical Processing & Water Treatment — Installed upstream and downstream of chemical metering pumps, dosing valves, injection quills, and treatment equipment in corrosion-resistant cemented Schedule 80 systems where routine service access is required without disturbing the surrounding bonded piping.
  • Municipal & Commercial Plumbing — Used at isolation points, equipment connections, and service unions in 1" Schedule 80 cemented systems where future disassembly is anticipated and the union joint must withstand repeated open-and-close cycles without seal degradation.
  • Irrigation & Agricultural Systems — Positioned at pump inlets, filter heads, and control valve bodies on 1" cemented Schedule 80 PVC systems to allow seasonal pump removal, filter servicing, or component replacement without cutting the cemented mainline piping.
  • Pool & Spa Equipment Rooms — Installed at chemical feed pump connections, chlorinator inlets, and auxiliary equipment ports in cemented Schedule 80 PVC systems where periodic disassembly and the o-ring's chemical resistance to pool treatment compounds are both required.
  • Laboratory & Semiconductor Facilities — Used in cemented Schedule 80 PVC ultrapure water, acid waste, and reagent distribution systems where an inline disconnection point is required for equipment maintenance or system reconfiguration without disturbing the permanently bonded pipe runs on either side.
