The 417-050 is a 5" Schedule 40 PVC 45° Elbow with Slip x Slip connections. This fitting changes the direction of a large-diameter PVC pressure line at a 45° angle, accepting solvent cement on both ends for a permanent, pressure-rated bond to standard Schedule 40 PVC pipe. Where a 90° elbow makes a sharp right-angle turn, the 45° elbow makes a gentler directional change — routing pipe around obstacles, adjusting alignment between offset centerlines, or transitioning a line diagonally through a structure — while introducing less turbulence and lower friction loss into the system than a full 90° turn.

At 5", the 417-050 is a large-format commercial and industrial fitting used in applications where significant flow volume demands that hydraulic efficiency be considered alongside directional geometry. Two 45° elbows in series can also substitute for a single 90° turn where the longer sweep radius improves flow characteristics or where physical installation constraints make a standard 90° fitting impractical. Both configurations are common on large-diameter municipal mains, agricultural irrigation systems, and industrial process piping.

Both slip sockets accept standard 5" Schedule 40 PVC pipe, and solvent cementing practice at this diameter is critical — large joints require a full two-step primer and cement application with proper assembly time and alignment hold before the joint sets. The white Schedule 40 PVC compound delivers broad corrosion resistance, good impact performance under normal service conditions, and a substantially lower installed weight versus ductile iron or steel elbows of the same size — a meaningful handling and labor advantage in the field when working with 5" pipe.

Specifications:

Specification Detail
Part Number 417-050
Material PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)
Schedule Schedule 40
Fitting Type 45° Elbow
Size 5"
Connection Type Slip x Slip (Socket)
Color White
Pressure Rating ~110 PSI @ 73°F
Temperature Range Up to 140°F (60°C)
Standard ASTM D1784, ASTM D2465
End Use Pressure Systems

⚠️ Note: Pressure ratings decrease as operating temperature increases. At large diameters, a full two-step solvent weld procedure (primer + cement) is required — do not skip priming on 5" joints. Hold fitting alignment firmly for the full recommended set time and allow complete cure before pressurizing per the cement manufacturer's instructions.

Industries & Applications:

  • Municipal Water Distribution — Offsets large-diameter distribution mains around underground utilities, grade transitions, and structural obstructions where a 90° turn would be hydraulically or spatially impractical
  • Irrigation & Agricultural Systems — Used on high-volume mainlines to make gradual directional changes across terrain, route around field infrastructure, and achieve alignment offsets between pump stations and distribution headers
  • Industrial Process Piping — Routes large-diameter process water, cooling water, and non-aggressive chemical lines through angular transitions on plant piping systems where minimizing pressure drop is a design consideration
  • Water & Wastewater Treatment — Applied in plant influent and effluent headers, filter backwash mains, and large-diameter distribution piping where smooth directional transitions reduce turbulence in high-flow lines
  • Commercial & Institutional Plumbing — Specified on large building domestic water mains and campus utility distribution lines where diagonal routing between floor penetrations, walls, or structural members requires a 45° offset rather than a square turn
  • Aquaculture & Commercial Pool/Spa — Used in large recirculating system headers and high-flow return lines where the lower head loss of a 45° fitting versus a 90° improves overall system hydraulic efficiency
