This 1/2" x 3/8" Schedule 80 PVC Bushing (Spigot x Slip) provides a compact, all solvent-cement transition from a 1/2" socket-end fitting hub down to a 3/8" PVC pipe run in industrial, chemical, and commercial PVC piping systems requiring Schedule 80 pressure ratings. Constructed in dark gray Schedule 80 PVC, it delivers the elevated wall thickness and pressure capacity required in demanding installations where standard Schedule 40 fittings are insufficient and where a 1/2" socket assembly must reduce to a 3/8" socket-based pipe run without introducing any threaded interfaces at the transition point.

The 1/2" spigot (male plain end) is sized to insert directly into the hub of any standard 1/2" socket-end fitting — tee, cross, coupling, elbow, or valve body — and is solvent-cemented in place to form a permanent, leak-free joint at the outer face. The 3/8" slip socket interior accepts a 3/8" PVC pipe for a permanent solvent-cement bond on the reduced-diameter outlet side, completing the transition in a single compact body. This Spigot x Slip configuration is the all-solvent-cement approach to socket reducing at this size combination, and is the correct choice when both the upstream 1/2" assembly and the downstream 3/8" run are entirely socket-based Schedule 80 PVC systems with no threaded interfaces required at the transition point. It should not be confused with any 838 series counterpart at this inlet size (Spigot x FPT), which provides a female-threaded outlet for connecting to male NPT-threaded components, or with the 839 series MPT x FPT Flush Bushing, which is installed entirely within threaded assemblies. The 1/2" to 3/8" step-down is a modest one-step small-bore reduction most commonly encountered where a 1/2" Schedule 80 socket assembly must supply a 3/8" dedicated socket pipe run to an instrument supply branch, small-bore chemical injection feed line, monitoring point lateral, or pressure tap stub in an all-cemented Schedule 80 system where maintaining socket construction throughout is a design priority.

Rated to approximately 850 psi at 73°F (governed by the 1/2" spigot end), this bushing is well-suited for demanding pressure service at small-bore instrument, monitoring, and service branch connection points. Its Schedule 80 PVC composition provides excellent resistance to acids, bases, salts, and chlorinated water, making it a durable long-term alternative to metal reducing bushings in corrosive environments. NSF/ANSI 61 listing confirms suitability for potable water contact.

Apply solvent cement to the spigot exterior and the interior of the receiving 1/2" socket hub per ASTM D2564 procedures, inserting fully and holding briefly for initial set. Apply solvent cement separately to the 3/8" pipe end exterior and the fitting's slip socket interior before inserting the pipe fully and maintaining a quarter-turn during assembly for even cement distribution. Complete each cemented joint in sequence and allow adequate cure time before pressurizing the system. Derate pressure ratings for elevated temperatures per published derating curves.

Industries & Applications:

  • Industrial Process Piping — Provides an all solvent-cement 1/2"-to-3/8" socket transition at instrument supply branches, chemical feed lateral step-downs, and small-bore monitoring line connections off 1/2" Schedule 80 tees, crosses, and manifold assemblies in chemical processing, water treatment, and manufacturing facilities where maintaining all-socket Schedule 80 construction throughout is a system design requirement
  • Chemical Handling — Delivers a corrosion-resistant, all solvent-cement small-bore socket reduction in Schedule 80 systems conveying acids, caustics, fertilizer solutions, and other fluids incompatible with metal fittings, where a 3/8" socket pipe run must branch off a 1/2" Schedule 80 socket assembly without introducing a threaded interface — preserving the all-cemented integrity of the chemical distribution, dosing, or injection system at the step-down point
  • Water Treatment & Aquaculture — Used at instrument supply branch transitions, pressure monitoring line step-downs, and chemical dosing lateral feed connections where a 1/2" Schedule 80 socket fitting must supply a 3/8" PVC pipe run to a monitoring instrument, sampling point, or small-bore distribution branch requiring NSF/ANSI 61 compliance and an all-cemented Schedule 80 assembly is specified throughout
  • Commercial Plumbing — Reduces 1/2" socket-end Schedule 80 tee branches and fitting ports to 3/8" Schedule 80 pipe runs at small-diameter instrument supply connections, pressure monitoring feed lines, and dedicated branch service points in high-pressure or exposed commercial building water supply systems where all-socket Schedule 80 construction is specified throughout
  • Irrigation & Water Distribution — Transitions 1/2" Schedule 80 socket fitting ports to 3/8" PVC pipe runs at dedicated instrument supply laterals, pressure monitoring connections, and small-bore service branch step-downs in high-pressure agricultural and municipal irrigation systems where Schedule 80 socket construction is maintained throughout and no threaded interface is required at the 1/2"-to-3/8" reduction point
  • HVAC & Mechanical Systems — Transitions 1/2" socket-end Schedule 80 fitting ports to 3/8" PVC pipe runs at instrument supply branches, pressure sensor feed lines, and small-bore chemical feed step-downs on cooling tower supply headers, chilled water distribution monitoring assemblies, and chemically treated water systems within the Schedule 80 pressure class
