The 848-025 is a 2-1/2" Schedule 80 PVC Cap with a Female Pipe Thread (FPT) connection. This fitting closes off the end of a male-threaded (MPT) pipe end or fitting port, stopping flow and maintaining system pressure at that termination point. The FPT connection threads directly onto any standard 2-1/2" MPT pipe end or fitting without solvent cement, making it a fully removable and reapplicable termination — the cap can be unscrewed and the port reopened for future expansion, seasonal service, system modification, or equipment connection without cutting pipe or disturbing the surrounding assembly.

The removability of a threaded cap is its defining advantage over a solvent-cemented slip cap (847-025). Where the slip cap is a permanent termination designed to remain in place for the life of the installation, the FPT cap is the correct specification wherever the termination point may need to be reopened: a capped stub-out reserved for a future branch connection, a seasonal shutoff point on an irrigation system, a pressure test port that will be reused across multiple test cycles, or an equipment connection that is temporarily capped during construction and will later receive a valve or fitting. If the termination is genuinely permanent, the slip cap is the more pressure-efficient choice; if there is any possibility the port will be reopened, the FPT cap is the right specification.

At 2-1/2", the 848-025 is sized for mid-size commercial and industrial pipe runs — a diameter commonly found on pump station branch lines, chemical distribution headers, irrigation sub-mains, and water treatment plant branch piping where threaded termination points are a routine element of the system design. Thread sealant tape (PTFE) or pipe dope rated for PVC service should be applied to the male threads before installation to ensure a leak-free seal at the joint. The cap should be tightened with a strap wrench to hand-tight plus one to two turns — do not use metal jaw wrenches on PVC cap bodies, and do not over-tighten, as PVC threads at 2-1/2" are susceptible to cracking under excessive torque.

Manufactured to Schedule 80 wall thickness standards, the 848-025 is rated for higher working pressures than a Schedule 40 cap of equivalent size and is the correct specification in systems where Schedule 80 fittings are required throughout. The dark gray rigid PVC compound resists a wide range of acids, bases, and industrial chemicals, making this cap a reliable long-term or serviceable termination fitting in corrosive service environments where metal end caps would degrade, corrode, or contaminate the process fluid.

Specifications:

Specification Detail
Part Number 848-025
Material PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)
Schedule Schedule 80
Fitting Type Cap
Size 2-1/2"
Connection Type FPT (Female Pipe Thread)
Color Dark Gray
Pressure Rating ~150 PSI @ 73°F
Temperature Range Up to 140°F (60°C)
Standard ASTM D1784, ASTM D2467
End Use Pressure Systems

⚠️ Note: Apply PTFE thread tape or PVC-compatible pipe dope to male threads before installation. Tighten with a strap wrench only — do not use metal jaw wrenches on PVC cap bodies. Do not over-tighten — PVC threads are susceptible to cracking under excessive torque at 2-1/2". If the termination is permanent and will never need to be reopened, the slip cap (847-025) provides a higher pressure rating and eliminates the threaded joint. Consult manufacturer derating tables for elevated-temperature service.

Industries & Applications:

  • Water & Wastewater Treatment — Terminates unused branch ports, stub-outs, and future-use connections on 2-1/2" treatment plant distribution headers and process piping with a removable threaded cap that preserves the port for later use without pipe modification
  • Chemical Processing — Closes off threaded ports on 2-1/2" chemical feed lines, manifold branch outlets, and equipment connections where the termination must remain removable for periodic maintenance access, system expansion, or equipment replacement without disturbing the cemented piping assembly
  • Industrial Plumbing — Caps open MPT pipe ends and fitting ports during phased construction, commissioning, and system expansion on industrial facilities where stub-outs are installed in advance of the equipment or secondary systems they will eventually serve
  • Pump Station & Equipment Connections — Temporarily caps 2-1/2" MPT ports on pump assemblies, manifold bodies, and valve stations during initial installation and commissioning, with the threaded cap later removed and replaced by the permanent valve or equipment connection when the system comes online
  • Irrigation & Agricultural Systems — Terminates 2-1/2" threaded branch ports on mainline distribution assemblies and control valve stations at the end of the irrigation season or during phased system buildout, preserving the port for reopening without pipe cutting when the next zone or expansion phase is connected
  • Municipal & Utility Infrastructure — Applied to 2-1/2" MPT stub-outs, blow-off valve ports, pressure test connections, and future-use branch ends on municipal water mains and pump station piping where the port must remain accessible and reopenable over the operational life of the system
