The 848-025 is a 2-1/2" Schedule 80 PVC Cap with a Female Pipe Thread (FPT) connection. This fitting closes off the end of a male-threaded (MPT) pipe end or fitting port, stopping flow and maintaining system pressure at that termination point. The FPT connection threads directly onto any standard 2-1/2" MPT pipe end or fitting without solvent cement, making it a fully removable and reapplicable termination — the cap can be unscrewed and the port reopened for future expansion, seasonal service, system modification, or equipment connection without cutting pipe or disturbing the surrounding assembly.

The removability of a threaded cap is its defining advantage over a solvent-cemented slip cap (847-025). Where the slip cap is a permanent termination designed to remain in place for the life of the installation, the FPT cap is the correct specification wherever the termination point may need to be reopened: a capped stub-out reserved for a future branch connection, a seasonal shutoff point on an irrigation system, a pressure test port that will be reused across multiple test cycles, or an equipment connection that is temporarily capped during construction and will later receive a valve or fitting. If the termination is genuinely permanent, the slip cap is the more pressure-efficient choice; if there is any possibility the port will be reopened, the FPT cap is the right specification.

At 2-1/2", the 848-025 is sized for mid-size commercial and industrial pipe runs — a diameter commonly found on pump station branch lines, chemical distribution headers, irrigation sub-mains, and water treatment plant branch piping where threaded termination points are a routine element of the system design. Thread sealant tape (PTFE) or pipe dope rated for PVC service should be applied to the male threads before installation to ensure a leak-free seal at the joint. The cap should be tightened with a strap wrench to hand-tight plus one to two turns — do not use metal jaw wrenches on PVC cap bodies, and do not over-tighten, as PVC threads at 2-1/2" are susceptible to cracking under excessive torque.

Manufactured to Schedule 80 wall thickness standards, the 848-025 is rated for higher working pressures than a Schedule 40 cap of equivalent size and is the correct specification in systems where Schedule 80 fittings are required throughout. The dark gray rigid PVC compound resists a wide range of acids, bases, and industrial chemicals, making this cap a reliable long-term or serviceable termination fitting in corrosive service environments where metal end caps would degrade, corrode, or contaminate the process fluid.
