The defining feature of this coupling — and the reason it is specified over a standard coupling at this diameter — is its extended socket depth. The deeper socket bore provides significantly more bonding surface area for the solvent weld joint than a standard coupling, producing a stronger, more reliable connection at a pipe size where joint integrity and proper cement coverage are increasingly critical.

At 4 inches, PVC pipe carries substantially more fluid mass and operating load than smaller diameters, and the forces acting on fittings and joints scale accordingly. The deep socket design directly addresses this by maximizing the glued surface area, reducing the risk of incomplete cement coverage, and giving installers a greater margin for proper joint formation — particularly important on large-diameter installations where fast solvent evaporation and the physical challenge of seating large pipe quickly can compromise standard-depth joints.
