The 482-040 is a 4-inch Schedule 40 PVC deep socket coupling with slip (socket) connections on both ends, designed to join two sections of 4-inch Schedule 40 PVC pipe via solvent cement. The defining feature of this coupling — and the reason it is specified over a standard coupling at this diameter — is its extended socket depth. The deeper socket bore provides significantly more bonding surface area for the solvent weld joint than a standard coupling, producing a stronger, more reliable connection at a pipe size where joint integrity and proper cement coverage are increasingly critical.

At 4 inches, PVC pipe carries substantially more fluid mass and operating load than smaller diameters, and the forces acting on fittings and joints scale accordingly. The deep socket design directly addresses this by maximizing the glued surface area, reducing the risk of incomplete cement coverage, and giving installers a greater margin for proper joint formation — particularly important on large-diameter installations where fast solvent evaporation and the physical challenge of seating large pipe quickly can compromise standard-depth joints.

Proper installation at 4" requires heavy-bodied PVC solvent cement applied generously and quickly to both the pipe end and socket bore, with immediate firm insertion and a quarter-turn rotation to distribute cement evenly. Two-person application is strongly recommended at this diameter to ensure the pipe is fully seated before the cement begins to set. A full 24-hour cure time should be observed before pressurizing the system.

This coupling is manufactured from virgin PVC compound conforming to ASTM D1784 Cell Classification 12454 and dimensioned to ASTM D2665 or ASTM D2466 standards for Schedule 40 PVC fittings.

Specifications:

Attribute Detail
Part Number 482-040

Color White
Schedule Schedule 40
Fitting Type Deep Socket Coupling
Connection Type Slip x Slip (Socket / Solvent Weld — Both Ends)
Size 4 inches
Socket Style Deep Socket (Extended Depth)
Dimensional Standard ASTM D2466 / ASTM D2665
Material Standard ASTM D1784, Cell Class 12454
Max Pressure Rating 140 PSI @ 73°F — derated by temperature
Pipe Compatibility Schedule 40 PVC Pipe, 4"

Pressure rating is for water service at 73°F. Derate for elevated temperatures per manufacturer guidelines. Joint strength is dependent on proper solvent cement selection, application technique, and cure time — use heavy-bodied PVC cement for 4" applications.

Industries & Applications:

The 482-040 deep socket coupling is used across residential, commercial, and light industrial applications wherever a maximum-strength solvent weld joint is required on 4-inch Schedule 40 PVC pipe:

  • Drain, Waste & Vent (DWV) Plumbing — Joining 4-inch drain and sewer lines in residential and commercial construction where deep socket joints provide added reliability on high-flow gravity drainage systems
  • Municipal & Residential Sewer Systems — Mainline sewer pipe connections where the extended socket depth provides superior joint strength against ground movement, soil loading, and hydrostatic pressure
  • Irrigation & Agricultural Water Distribution — Coupling 4-inch mainline irrigation headers and pump discharge piping where a robust solvent weld joint is required across long runs and buried installations
  • Stormwater & Drainage Infrastructure — Joining 4-inch Schedule 40 PVC in stormwater collection, detention, and conveyance systems where reliable, long-service joints are required in buried or exposed applications
  • Industrial Process & Chemical Piping — Light-duty chemical and process lines where Schedule 40 pressure ratings are sufficient and the deep socket joint adds a margin of installation reliability on large-bore runs
  • Swimming Pool & Aquatic Facility Plumbing — Suction and return mainlines on commercial pool and aquatic systems where 4-inch pipe runs demand consistently strong solvent weld couplings
  • HVAC & Mechanical Systems — Condensate drain mains and large-bore utility water lines where 4-inch PVC is specified and joint reliability is a maintenance priority
