This 1" x 1/2" Schedule 40 PVC 90 Degree Reducing Elbow (Slip x Slip) combines a right-angle direction change and a one-step pipe size reduction from 1" to 1/2" into a single compact all-socket fitting body — accepting a 1" PVC pipe at the inlet socket for a permanent solvent-cement bond and providing a 1/2" slip socket at the outlet for a permanent solvent-cement bond on the reduced-diameter downstream pipe run departing at 90 degrees. Constructed in white Schedule 40 PVC, it eliminates both the intermediate reducer coupling or spigot bushing and the additional joints that a standard full-size 1" elbow plus a separate 1" x 1/2" size-reduction fitting would require at the same assembly location.

The 1" slip socket inlet accepts 1" PVC pipe for a permanent solvent-cement bond, anchoring the fitting to the upstream 1" socket distribution assembly at the direction change point. The 1/2" slip socket outlet accepts 1/2" PVC pipe for a permanent solvent-cement bond on the downstream pipe run, simultaneously stepping the assembly diameter down from 1" to 1/2" and redirecting the pipe run 90 degrees from the inlet axis — delivering both the direction change and the size transition in a single fitting. This reducing configuration is the correct choice when all three conditions must be met simultaneously at the same assembly point — a 1" socket pipe run upstream requiring a 90-degree turn, and a 1/2" socket pipe run required on the downstream leg of that turn; it should not be confused with the full-size 1" Slip x Slip 90 Degree Elbow (406 series full-size if stocked), which maintains a 1" socket outlet on both sides without size reduction, or with the standard 1" x 1/2" slip reducer coupling or spigot bushing (437 series), which reduces inline without a direction change. The 1" to 1/2" step-down is a meaningful 2:1 reduction — the most aggressive confirmed in the 406 series reducing sub-series at the 1" inlet — and is most commonly encountered in irrigation grid assemblies where a 1" all-socket distribution mainline or sub-main must simultaneously change direction at a 90-degree turn and supply a dedicated 1/2" socket drip emitter supply stub, small-bore service branch, or lateral distribution run departing at right angles from the main direction change point; in commercial plumbing branch supply assemblies where a 1" socket main must simultaneously turn and step down to a 1/2" dedicated fixture or equipment supply run; and in process water assemblies where a 1" socket header must simultaneously change direction and supply a smaller 1/2" socket service or instrument line in the most compact possible fitting body at the turn location.

Rated to approximately 450 psi at 73°F (governed by the 1" slip inlet end), this elbow is suited for standard commercial and light industrial pressure service. Its PVC composition provides excellent resistance to corrosion, scale, chlorinated water, and a broad range of chemical exposures, making it a reliable long-term alternative to metal elbows in moisture-prone or chemically active environments. NSF/ANSI 61 listing confirms suitability for potable water contact.

Apply solvent cement to both the pipe end and fitting socket at each port per ASTM D2564 procedures, using a primer appropriate for the pipe and fitting schedule. Insert pipe fully into each socket and maintain a quarter-turn during assembly for even cement distribution across the joint surface. Plan the outlet direction of the elbow before cementing the inlet joint — the downstream 1/2" pipe run alignment is established when the 1" inlet joint is cemented and cannot be adjusted after cure. Allow adequate cure time before pressurizing the system, and derate pressure ratings for elevated temperatures per published derating curves.

Industries & Applications:

  • Irrigation & Water Distribution — Simultaneously changes direction and steps down from a 1" all-socket mainline or sub-main run to a 1/2" socket drip emitter supply stub, lateral distribution run, or small-bore service branch in residential and light commercial irrigation assemblies where both the 90-degree turn and the 1" to 1/2" size reduction must occur at the same fitting location — eliminating a separate full-size elbow plus reducer coupling at the most common adjacent-size corner reduction point in all-socket irrigation grid assemblies
  • Drip & Micro-Irrigation Systems — Provides a simultaneous 90-degree turn and 1" to 1/2" socket size reduction at transition points where a 1" all-socket distribution main must supply a 1/2" drip emitter lateral, micro-irrigation sub-header, or dedicated small-bore zone run departing at right angles from the main run in compact drip and micro-irrigation system assemblies where fitting count and assembly footprint at the turn-and-reduce location are constrained
  • Commercial Plumbing — Simultaneously redirects and reduces 1" socket PVC distribution mains to 1/2" socket dedicated fixture supply, equipment feed, or small-bore service runs at wall penetrations, structural transitions, and equipment connection approach points in commercial building water distribution systems where the 90-degree turn and one-step size reduction must occur at the same compact fitting location
  • Industrial Process Piping — Provides a simultaneous direction change and 1" to 1/2" socket size reduction at process water distribution header turn-and-reduce points, instrument supply branch connections, and small-bore service line departures in water treatment, chemical processing, and manufacturing facilities where fitting count at all-socket turn-and-reduce locations is a design priority
  • Chemical Handling — Delivers a corrosion-resistant simultaneous 90-degree direction change and 1" to 1/2" all-socket size reduction in systems conveying acids, caustics, fertilizer solutions, and other fluids incompatible with metal fittings at all-socket chemical distribution turn-and-reduce locations where combining direction change and size reduction in a single body reduces leak-risk joint count throughout the assembly
  • Water Treatment & Aquaculture — Used at 90-degree turn-and-reduce points in 1" all-socket distribution assemblies where the downstream pipe run must simultaneously change direction and step down to 1/2" socket construction with NSF/ANSI 61 compliance required throughout the all-cemented assembly
