The 854-020 is a 2" PVC Schedule 80 loose ring flange in a slip (socket) end configuration. The slip end accepts 2" plain-end pipe for solvent welding, while the loose ring — a separate rotating collar that sits behind the flange face — allows the bolt holes to be rotated freely to any position before bolting up to the mating flange. Once the pipe is solvent welded into the socket body and the joint has cured, the loose ring can still be turned to align the bolt pattern to the mating flange without rotating the pipe. This rotational freedom is the defining advantage of the loose ring design, and it is what distinguishes the 854-020 from the solid style flange (851-020) in the same size and schedule.
