Plug, MPT PVC Schedule 40 2" (450-020)

This 2" Schedule 40 PVC Threaded Plug (MPT) provides a clean, pressure-rated closure for any standard 2" female NPT-threaded fitting, valve body port, manifold connection, or equipment female-threaded outlet in commercial and light industrial piping systems. Constructed in white Schedule 40 PVC, it offers the corrosion resistance and chemical compatibility required across a wide range of fluid handling applications where a large-diameter female-threaded port must be sealed reliably without the added cost or weight of a metal plug.

The single male pipe thread (MPT) exterior is cut to NPT tapered thread standards, threading directly into any 2" FPT or FIP female-threaded fitting, tee branch outlet, cross port, valve body connection, or manifold spare port to form a pressure-tight mechanical closure when made up with thread sealant or PTFE tape. As a terminal fitting, the threaded plug is the standard solution for sealing unused branch outlets on large-diameter tees and crosses, closing spare manifold ports between system expansion phases, capping pressure test points after commissioning, and terminating dead-end valve body connections in all-threaded or mixed-connection PVC distribution assemblies. At 2", this plug is most commonly encountered closing spare ports on large-diameter tees, crosses, valve bodies, and distribution manifolds in irrigation pump stations, commercial plumbing distribution assemblies, and process water headers where 2" is a standard mainline diameter and unused ports must be sealed during initial installation or phased system buildout. The MPT plug threads into a female port — it should not be confused with the FPT cap (448 series), which threads over a male pipe end rather than into a female port, the slip cap (447 series), which sockets over a pipe end and is solvent-cemented in place, or the spigot plug (449 series), which cements into a socket fitting hub rather than threading into a female port.

Rated to approximately 280 psi at 73°F, this plug is suited for standard commercial and light industrial water distribution and irrigation service within its pressure class. Its PVC composition provides excellent resistance to corrosion, scale, chlorinated water, and a broad range of chemical exposures — including resistance to seizing onto female threads over time, which makes PVC a more maintainable long-term closure than metal plugs in moisture-prone or chemically active environments. NSF/ANSI 61 listing confirms suitability for potable water contact, including use in drinking water distribution and treatment systems.

Install using a quality pipe thread sealant or PTFE tape on the male NPT threads before engagement. At 2", ensure even thread engagement around the full circumference before applying final torque — uneven engagement at large diameters can result in cross-threading or incomplete seating. Avoid over-torquing — PVC threads require hand-tight plus one to two turns; excessive force can crack the fitting or distort thread engagement. If used as a temporary test plug, inspect the fitting and threads before returning to service. Derate pressure ratings for elevated temperatures per published derating curves.
