The 475-212 is a Schedule 40 PVC reduced wye fitting with 1-1/2-inch slip (socket) connections on both run ends and a 1-1/4-inch slip (socket) outlet on the branch. All three ports accept PVC pipe via solvent cement — the 1-1/2" run sockets accept standard 1-1/2" Schedule 40 or Schedule 80 PVC pipe, while the 1-1/4" branch socket accepts standard 1-1/4" Schedule 40 or Schedule 80 PVC pipe. The reduced branch configuration allows the 1-1/2" main run to continue uninterrupted while feeding a smaller 1-1/4" branch line, eliminating the need for a separate inline reducing bushing or coupling downstream of the branch outlet.

The defining functional advantage of a wye over a standard tee is the branch angle: where a tee introduces flow from a branch at a sharp 90° perpendicular to the run, a wye merges or diverts flow at a gradual 45° angle. This shallower branch geometry substantially reduces turbulence at the junction, lowers pressure drop through the fitting, and minimizes mechanical stress on the pipe run — making the wye the preferred fitting type over a tee in drainage, gravity-flow, vented waste, and low-velocity process lines where smooth flow transition is a design priority. In pressurized systems, the hydraulic efficiency advantage of the wye also supports better flow balance in branched distribution networks compared to tee-based layouts.

Rated at 235 PSI at 73°F for water service, the 475-212 is suitable for both pressurized supply systems and non-pressurized drainage and gravity-flow applications within the Schedule 40 PVC operating envelope. Manufactured from rigid, high-impact PVC compound conforming to ASTM D2466, this fitting is dimensionally compatible with standard Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 PVC pipe and fittings throughout. Apply a medium-bodied PVC primer and standard-bodied PVC cement per ASTM D2564 to all three socket ports and corresponding pipe ends before assembly; ensure full pipe insertion to the socket stop and maintain joint alignment during the cure set period at all three connections.

Industries & Applications:

  • Municipal & Commercial Plumbing — Joins a 1-1/4" branch line to a 1-1/2" supply or drainage main at a 45° angle in commercial plumbing systems where the shallower branch geometry reduces turbulence, supports smoother flow transitions, and is preferred over a tee at drainage and vent junctions.
  • Drainage & Waste Systems — The standard fitting choice for branch connections in DWV (drain-waste-vent) and gravity-flow drainage systems where the 45° wye entry angle maintains flow velocity, reduces blockage risk at the junction, and meets code requirements favoring wye configurations over tees in horizontal drain lines.
  • Water Treatment & Distribution — Used at branched distribution headers, secondary treatment feeds, and flow diversion points in Schedule 40 PVC systems where the wye's hydraulic efficiency supports balanced flow across the branch and run without the pressure loss associated with a 90° tee branch.
  • Irrigation & Agricultural Systems — Installed at mainline lateral junctions, zone supply branches, and drip distribution headers where a 1-1/2" cemented run must feed a 1-1/4" cemented branch line at a gradual angle to maintain system pressure and minimize head loss across the branching point.
  • Industrial Process Piping — Provides a low-turbulence branch connection in 1-1/2" PVC process lines handling corrosive fluids, chemical solutions, or aggressive industrial media where minimizing flow disruption at junction points is a process or equipment protection requirement.
  • Pool & Spa Plumbing — Used at circulation system branch points, equipment manifold junctions, and secondary circuit takeoffs where the 45° entry angle reduces resistance in high-flow systems and supports efficient pump performance across multi-branch circulation assemblies.
