The 402-289 is a Schedule 40 PVC reducing tee with 2-1/2-inch slip (socket) connections on both run ends and a 1-inch female pipe thread (FPT) outlet on the branch. The two 2-1/2" run-end sockets accept standard 2-1/2" Schedule 40 or Schedule 80 PVC pipe via solvent cement, maintaining a permanent, pressure-rated inline run, while the 1" FPT branch receives a 1" male-threaded fitting, valve, pump port, union tail, or adapter downstream. The 1" branch size marks a meaningful transition within the 2-1/2" run sub-series of the 402 matrix — moving beyond the minimal-bore instrumentation and injection applications served by the 402-287 (1/2" branch) and 402-288 (3/4" branch) into moderate-flow territory where the threaded branch connection must carry real flow to a downstream valve body, equipment inlet, secondary circuit feed, or serviceable takeoff point.

The mixed slip-slip-FPT configuration preserves the core serviceability advantage of the 402 series: the cemented 2-1/2" run is permanent and undisturbed on both sides of the fitting, while the 1" FPT branch can be broken and reassembled independently at any time for valve replacement, equipment service, union removal, or system modification — without cutting into the main pipe run. This combination of a large permanent cemented run with a moderate-flow serviceable threaded branch is particularly well suited to pump station manifolds, filter assembly headers, and distribution system mainlines where a 1" threaded isolation valve, flow control device, or equipment connection must be accessible for routine maintenance without requiring a line shutdown and pipe cut on the main run.

A threaded cap or plug installed in the 1" FPT branch during system commissioning allows the port to be sealed and opened later when the branch connection is needed — a practical advantage in phased installations or systems designed with future service or equipment connection points in mind. Manufactured from rigid, high-impact PVC compound, the 402-289 conforms to ASTM D2466 dimensional standards and is rated for continuous cold-water pressure service. Apply a medium-bodied PVC primer and standard-bodied PVC cement per ASTM D2564 to both 2-1/2" run-end sockets; apply PTFE thread tape or an approved pipe thread sealant to any male-threaded fitting before engaging the 1" FPT branch. Do not overtighten the threaded connection, as PVC threads can crack under excessive torque.

Industries & Applications:

  • Municipal & Commercial Plumbing — Adds a moderate-flow 1" threaded branch to a permanent 2-1/2" cemented supply or service main for isolation valve connections, equipment tie-ins, meter bypass ports, or serviceable secondary circuit takeoffs in commercial plumbing systems where the large-bore main run must remain permanently bonded.
  • Water Treatment & Distribution — Used on 2-1/2" Schedule 40 distribution headers, filter manifold runs, and treatment system mains where a 1" threaded branch port is required for isolation valves, secondary treatment feeds, flow control devices, or moderate-flow service connections without interrupting the cemented large-bore main run.
  • Irrigation & Agricultural Systems — Installed on 2-1/2" mainline runs at pump station headers, filter assembly manifolds, and zone distribution points where a 1" threaded branch provides a serviceable takeoff for zone control valves, pressure regulator inlets, flow meter connections, or moderate-flow lateral supply lines off a large-bore cemented system main.
  • Industrial Process Piping — Provides a moderate-flow serviceable threaded branch on a permanent 2-1/2" Schedule 40 PVC process line for 1" isolation valves, bypass circuit feeds, secondary process connections, or equipment inlet tie-ins in corrosion-resistant systems where the large-bore cemented run must remain permanently bonded and the branch must support meaningful flow.
  • Pool & Spa Equipment Rooms — Adds a 1" threaded branch to 2-1/2" cemented Schedule 40 circulation or return header piping for isolation valve connections, auxiliary equipment feeds, chemical system tie-ins, or secondary circuit takeoffs that require independent disconnection and periodic service without disturbing the large-bore cemented run.
  • HVAC & Chilled Water Systems — Provides a 1" threaded branch on a 2-1/2" Schedule 40 PVC drainage or secondary piping run in commercial mechanical systems where a moderate-flow serviceable connection — for isolation valves, drain branches, or equipment tie-ins — must be introduced at a large-diameter cemented main without cutting into the permanent pipe run.
