The 498-015 is a 1-1/2" PVC Schedule 40 O-ring type union in an FPT x FPT (Female Pipe Thread x Female Pipe Thread) configuration, providing a tool-free, fully removable connection point in a threaded PVC pipeline. Both ends accept 1-1/2" MPT fittings, nipples, or equipment connections, while the union body itself can be disconnected and reconnected at the slip nut without disturbing either threaded end — making this fitting the standard solution wherever a section of piping, a piece of equipment, or a valve assembly needs to be removed, serviced, or replaced without cutting into the line.

The O-ring sealing mechanism is the defining feature of this union series. Rather than relying on a threaded or solvent-welded face-to-face joint, the union uses a captive elastomeric O-ring compressed between the two union halves when the slip nut is tightened. This produces a clean, consistent, leak-free seal that is easy to re-engage and requires no thread sealant, pipe dope, or cement at the union joint itself. The O-ring can be inspected and replaced independently if wear or chemical degradation occurs over time, extending the service life of the union body.

The FPT x FPT configuration makes the 498-015 compatible with existing threaded piping, equipment ports, pump connections, valve assemblies, and other MPT-terminated components without requiring additional adapters. PTFE thread tape or a compatible PVC-rated thread sealant should be applied to the male threads of all mating fittings at both ends before assembly. Avoid petroleum-based pipe dopes, which can degrade PVC over time.

Schedule 40 PVC provides the pressure ratings and chemical resistance appropriate for the broad range of applications this union serves — irrigation systems, water treatment, chemical feed, and general commercial plumbing — at a lighter wall thickness and lower cost than Schedule 80 where the added wall thickness is not required.
